I really like these simulations, but they are hard. Max grade 36%, 874 feet elevation gain, which is just brutal. I had to “hold on” for most over 30%. Great hill climb and strength training. Added some heavy bag work, dbell presses for scapula repair, hangs and leg lifts.

Photo

Humility Never Felt So Good

slow? so.

Today was my first race since “the sickness”, and it felt so good to be out there I {{{almost}}} didn’t notice the frustrating, ever-present tightness in my chest.

27:12, slow, but a far cry from barely being able to walk a month ago.

But that’s a whole ‘nother thing. I feel pretty lame to be all bummed about running slowly when in reality, I’m lucky to be running at all. It’s just the ego sneakin up on me again and I really should be keeping things in perspective.

So I’ll just keep at it. Paralyzed diaphragm be damned. I just have to find ways to keep strengthening my body, in unusual ways, and find training techniques that will allow me to improve even with the current limitations given to me.

Wait, …what limitations? :)

Post-Sickness 5K

Welp, I’m registered for a 5K on Monday, Memorial Day, which is three (3) days away. I’m pretty sure I can get through as long as I stay within where I am currently from a speed perspective, and just go out and have fun.

The goal: sub-28 (sounds so funny)

I’ve come a long way, but getting in a race, even when I’m slow, will help me stay strong for additional fight.

Live every day like it’s your last, right?

Photo

Back From The Keys 100

Wow. I have no idea where to start. Since 5/17, I’ve…

Running

Good 2 mile warm-up with transcon runner John Pyle as he passed through Key Largo: Running with John Pyle

Ran the 7-mile bridge with Weezy at mile 53, getting him over the bridge in 1:17

Ran 11 miles with Weezy from mile marker 19 to mile marker 8

Walking

Walked all over Key Largo and Key West

Biking

Biked all over Key West. At least 10 miles total

Bought beach cruisers and biked 4 miles with my lady in the neighborhood

SUP

Scored some SUP rental and took Babette on a journey through the channels and tunnels around Key West

Still suffering the inability to breathe normally and still struggling with the thoracic nerve damage preventing extension and normal strength in my neck, back and shoulders, but who cares - I’m still a’goin.

back at it.

back at it.

GOAL: To break into the 7s by the end of May. The next week I started training.

While the frustrating reports continue to come in, I keep forging ahead.

Now, one month back to moving my body, and simply starting with walking, here’s where I am…

Running

Running 3 miles at 8:34

Have covered as much as 5 miles in training at a time

11-15 mile weeks

some barefoot training during martial arts

I am only running on half a diaphragm, but I’m training and strengthening the other muscles that help me breath without the diaphragm.

I believe I can improve this most efficiently by training shorter, and continuing to improve my speed. This creates maximum heart rate and oxygen needs and will strengthen my breathing muscles faster and better.

Martial Arts

Helping me learn to stay focused and relax

Enjoying the kicking, blocking, punching and forms training

Great for improving my flexibility. I am really tight!

Strength

I am coming to the realization that there is a lot I can do with just bodyweight exercises

Training heavy bag, speed bag, some presses, kettlebell work, and isometrics

Diet

186 on Friday (May 11, 2012)

As usual, eating too much. Need to get that in check

Sugar is my demon

Still fighting. Won’t quit. Every day gets better (albeit SORE)

Photo

Round 3, but Fit for the Fight

Yesterday, I got a third blow in the medical saga: goo.gl/ogxdA

But, after some frustration and bawling and kicking and punching the air, I decided to get back in the ring. After all, there are 15 rounds in a fight …i’m just on round three.

still have time to win.

3 mile walk yesterday (5/9) with the family (with an ice cream break in the middle)

…and 4 miles today (as per the attached image)

You can keep trying to break me, but it will just break you.

I am more consistent now than I have ever been before. I respect training and the ability to do so much more now than when I was stronger, faster, healthier and more fit.

I’ll get back there.

Atlanta Track Club, y’all better save me a slot on the Masters Competitive Team ‘cuz I’m comin’.

FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!

FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!

Photo

Photo

Photo

first day running a distance straight thru.
